Installing

BookmarkWizard is a Manifest V3 extension for Chromium browsers (Chrome, Edge, Brave, Arc). The Chrome Web Store listing is being prepared; until it is live, request early access from the contact form and you will get the extension package with load-unpacked instructions:

  1. Unzip the package somewhere you can keep it.
  2. Open chrome://extensions and switch on Developer mode (top right).
  3. Click Load unpacked and pick the unzipped folder.
  4. Pin the wizard to your toolbar, then hide the bookmarks bar for good withCtrl+Shift+B (⌘+Shift+B on Mac).

The popup opens by clicking the toolbar icon or pressing Alt+B — rebindable any time at chrome://extensions/shortcuts. Every install starts a30-day free trial automatically; no card and no account are involved.

Trial, subscribing, and your license key

The first 30 days are the complete extension. Inside the last week the popup shows how many days remain, and Settings shows the same countdown.

When the trial ends BookmarkWizard becomes read-only rather than going dark: search, browsing, and opening bookmarks keep working — they are your bookmarks — while saving, renaming, moving, deleting, and creating folders wait for a subscription.

Subscribing is $3/year and covers 3 devices. Use the Subscribe button in Settings (or the banner in the popup) to reach Stripe Checkout. When the payment completes, the key appears on the thank-you page and arrives by email. To activate: open Settings (the sliders icon), paste the key underLicense, and click Activate.

Moving to another browser or machine? Activate the same key there. If every slot is taken, either click Deactivate this device on a browser you no longer use, or free the slot from thelicense portal.

Lost the key? Open the license portal and sign in with the Google account that matches your purchase email — the portal lists your keys, emails you a copy, and manages device slots. Renewals happen automatically once a year; you get a reminder a week ahead and a receipt after each charge. Cancel any time from the receipt link or by emailing support: the license stays valid until the end of the year you paid for.

Everyday use

The popup opens with the search box focused — just start typing. Search matches titles and URLs, and every result shows its folder path so you know where it lives. PressingEnter in the search box opens the first result. Clearing the search (or pressing Escape) returns to the tree view: your Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks, and every folder, with expand/collapse state remembered between visits.

Clicking a bookmark opens it in the current tab by default.Ctrl/⌘-click or middle-click opens it in a background tab (handy for queueing several), Shift-click opens a new foreground tab, and a setting flips the default to always-new-tab if that's how you roll.

Saving pages

The star in the popup header saves the current page into your default folder (configurable in settings — "Other bookmarks" out of the box) and immediately opens an inline editor so you can rename or re-file it without extra clicks. If the page is already bookmarked the star shows filled, and clicking it jumps to the existing bookmark instead of creating a duplicate.

Organizing

Hover any row for its edit and delete actions. Edit opens an inline form to rename, change the URL, or move the item to another folder from a picker. Delete uses a click-again confirm — the button arms red, a second click deletes, and it disarms by itself if you wander off. Folders delete with their contents, so the confirm matters.

Drag rows to reorder them, or drop a row onto a folder to move it inside. The folder-plus button in the header creates a new folder under any parent. Chrome's root containers (Bookmarks bar, Other bookmarks) are protected — they can't be renamed, moved, or deleted, same as everywhere else in the browser.

Keyboard reference

  • Alt+B — open the popup (rebindable)
  • ↑ / ↓ — move through the list
  • → / ← — expand / collapse a folder, or hop to its parent
  • Enter — open a bookmark or toggle a folder
  • F2 — rename the focused item
  • Delete — delete (with the same click-again confirm)
  • Any letter — jump back to search and keep typing
  • Escape — clear the search, then close the popup

Settings

The sliders icon opens settings: theme (match system, light, or dark),default save folder for the star, open in a new tab as the default click behavior, and favicons on or off for an even quieter list. Settings sync through your browser profile via extension storage.

Privacy

Your bookmarks never leave the browser: they are read and written through Chrome's own API, and favicons come from Chrome's local cache. There is no analytics and no page access — the extension cannot see the sites you visit. The only network calls it makes go to api.bookmarkwizard.app to activate and re-check your license, and they carry just the license key and a random device id. Permissions:bookmarks (managing them is the whole point), favicon (local site icons), storage (settings, open folders, trial start, license),activeTab (the current tab's title and URL, only when you hit the star), andalarms (a once-a-day license check).

Troubleshooting

Alt+B doesn't open the popup — another extension probably owns the shortcut; reassign it at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.Some favicons are generic — icons come from Chrome's local favicon cache, so sites you've never visited in this profile may not have one yet; visit the site once and it fills in. Chrome shows a "Developer mode extensions" notice after restart — that's Chrome's standard reminder for any unpacked extension; it disappears once BookmarkWizard installs from the Web Store."Maximum device activations reached" — all three slots are in use; free one from the license portal or deactivate a browser you no longer use.Editing stopped working after a reinstall — the trial clock is tied to your browser profile, not the install, so a reinstall does not grant another 30 days; activate your key (or subscribe) to restore editing.
